- Body: 100% polyester; Weight: 367 g/m2 10,000mm waterproof/10,000 g/m2/24-hour breathability; Panels: 95% polyester 5% elastane; Use simple detergents with no additives; Never use detergents with fabric softeners, perfumes or any additive type product; The general rule of thumb is the simpler the better.; Many detergents with additives leave "surfactants" behind on a fabric's fibers that inhibit the technical performance; Typically the best detergents to use will have "Clear" or "Free" in their names; Don't pour the detergent directly onto the clothing, put it in the washer first, when you start the water; If something is not functionally working, but is not dirty, try rinsing it twice in warm to hot water; This will help get rid of the harmful surfactants. Read the care content label; On the inside of your garment, or on the hangcard, there are instructions for the care of that individual piece; On garments this will be on a side seam or back seam label. Follow those directions; On finer fabrics, use a "Gentle" cycle. Close all zippers, attach "hook and loop" closures on gloves You can use the dryer, carefully; If you use a dryer be sure to use a lower / warm heat setting (Do NOT use a commercial dryer or a "Hot" setting); This will often restore the fabric and help the water and wind repellent qualities; If in doubt, hang the clothing to dry.

Although not rated as a "winter jacket", with additional layering I found it quit acceptable. With a layer of: a short sleeve base layer shirt, a PI Transfer Zip Neck Long Sleeve Base layer, and some bibs I road just a bit below my preferred comfortable level (meaning I was cooler than I like, but not cold) in 18 degree weather, 50 min ride. FIT- is great, has a nice conformed fit but not body hugging, sleeves are nice and long. The Real Red color is nice for winter because it stands out against the snowy back ground and I wanted a reason to break the ninja dress code; The Real Red does not match up to other reds very well (if you even care about color coordination, some ppl do), looks great with black of course. Seems to vent well, with execpetion of pockets (read on). Dislikes, only one! The front pocket is a nice place for a phone, however, moisture from perspiration gets in both the front and back pockets, I suggest bagging your phone prior to riding.

I already own Pearl Izumi's Gavia jacket (circa 2007) and use that in my 32 - 45 degree rides. Once it gets that cold, I usually only ride for just over an hour and that jacket works great with a base layer. I was looking for something a little warmer for sub-freezing days and to augment the Gavia jacket on those mid-30s rides. The shell material on the Elite Softshell jacket is slightly thicker than what is used for the Gavia. Both have a fleece lining. Construction is similar in that the underside of the sleeves is a more breathable fabric. This model differs in that there is a larger area under the armpits and down the sides that is breathable. Also, the Gavia jacket has an oval area in the upper part of the back that uses the more breathable fabric. This jacket uses the same heavier softshell material for the entire back. The Elite Softshell jacket also has the three back pockets conceiled inside a large, sleekly designed zipper compartment in the back. It makes it more streamlined and less air resistant. A nice feature. The tail of the jacket is extended and has a grippy band around the hem that keeps the jacket from creeping up while in the drops.
I went out for my first ride with it on a sunny 22 degree day with 14 mph wind and 30 mph gusts. A real test for sure. I had two light baselayers under it and a balaclava. My arms were cool in the headwinds, but fine otherwise. My body was mostly fine. Gusts seem to cut right through the breathable side panels, but that also helped vent perspiration. With a tailwind, everything was fine. This was definitely colder than any ride I had been on in a long time, so I have to say the jacket did well on balance. (BTW, the remaining water in my water bottle was partly frozen when I got home) Where the jacket could have used some help was ventilation in the back. Once I returned home, I realized how much sweat there was on my back. I think the Gavia jacket permits that moisture to evaporate better. It may have been caused by the two base layers. I'll try it again with just one the next time.
I have to give this jacket an "A plus" for fit and function, but only a "B plus" for moisture management. On balance I am very happy with the jacket and would recommend it to anyone who rides in cold temperatures. Like any cold weather gear, sometimes you have to tweak your layering to get the right level of performance, and I'm sure this will do fine.

By Paul R. Burton
I just returned from my first ride with this jacket on an overcast and gusty, 44 degree ride. The windchill was simply cold. Under the jacket I wore a long-sleeve thermal base layer.
The cut of this jacket is athletic, which means that if you have any extra bulk on you or bulk in odd places, it probably won't fit quite right. However, if you can where fitted garments, the Elite Softshell will do you right. I'm 5'11" and weigh in at 155lbs. Not sure about arm length, but the sleeves are plenty long. I found the medium to be a nearly perfect fit. Snug at the waist, tapered up the torso and just loose enough in the arms to be comfortable. Absolutely no issues wearing a base layer. In fact, I could easily have worn something thicker.
Contrary to other opinions, I'd say if you generally wear a medium, buy the medium.
On the ride, my torso stayed warm the entire ride. It's far more breathable than my shell, but I still managed to sweat up a storm. I found that the only part of my body that was consistently chilly was my arms - not due to wind. The jacket is wind-proof. However, the material is thin enough that despite the micro fleece liner, you can feel the chill. You won't be cold, just chilly (not a bad thing).
Will it be comfortable under 30 / 20 degrees? I'll let you know. Overall, I loved riding in the Elite Softshell.
Highly recommended: Excellent build quality, looks great and is much cheaper than most other brands.
